No. The UAE does not ban plastic as a material. It restricts selected single-use plastic products, such as shopping bags and, from 1 January 2026, single-use cups, lids, cutlery, plates, straws, stirrers and Styrofoam food containers. Durable industrial plastics such as rods, sheets, bushings, gears and moulded parts are not single-use items. For a specific product, confirm with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE).
The rules target single-use products, not a particular type of plastic. The banned items include single-use plastic cups and lids, cutlery, plates, straws, stirrers and food containers made of Styrofoam (expanded polystyrene), and single-use bags thinner than 50 microns whatever they are made of. Exemptions include products for export, items made in the UAE from recycled materials, medicine and refuse bags, thin fresh-food wraps and large shopping bags for clothing, electronics and toys. Rules can change, so check the latest MOCCAE guidance.
